New study breaks common myth surrounding Valley fever

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) – A new study based in the Phoenix area is breaking a common myth about exposure to the fungus that causes Valley fever. Researchers with the Translational Genomics Research Institute or TGen analyzed more than 5,200 air filters across the valley over an 18-month period that collected spores that contain the fungus that causes Valley fever. According to Dr. David Engelthaler, the data shows that there is not an increased risk to Valley fever after a haboob or dust storm, it was long believed the the spreading dusts would cause an uptick in cases.
