Investigation ongoing after child dies at WNC wilderness camp

An investigation is ongoing after the death of a 12 year old boy in Western North Carolina earlier this month. The Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office responded February 3rd after a child was found unresponsive at the Trails Carolina Wilderness Camp.

The child, who was originally from New York, reportedly had a panic attack the night before he was found dead. Staff told investigators they checked on the boy every few hours until he was found dead around 7:45 AM that morning.

Staff reported he was checked on around 6AM that same morning and was fine. The boy was said to have been placed in a tent that had an alarm on it that would buzz if he tried to exit the tent.

The camp had a child die after being sent there back in 2014. Thus far, no arrests or charges have been announced in the most recent incident.
