Chief Justice Paul Newby of the North Carolina Supreme Court will give the commencement address at Campbell University School of Law’s 46th annual graduation ceremony on May 10, 2024. The event will be held at the Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh’s Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts. Newby, elected to the Supreme Court in 2004, also teaches state constitutional law and appellate practice at the law school.
The law school traditionally invites the current Governor and Chief Justice to speak at their graduation ceremonies. Dean J. Rich Leonard is pleased to announce that Justice Newby will continue this tradition. Newby, a North Carolina native, began his law career in Asheville and later served as vice president and general counsel of Cannon Mills Realty and Development Corp.
In 1985, Newby became an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, a position he held for over 19 years. He co-authored The North Carolina State Constitution with History and Commentary (2d ed. 2013) with Professor John V. Orth. His work has earned him several awards, including the Citizen Lawyer Award in 2011 and the John McNeill Smith Jr. Award in 2012.
