Seven volunteers worked alongside carpenters on Friday, Feb. 9 as Sun Prairie and Habitat for Humanity continue to build housing for local Dane County families.
The hard work took place at 1135 Westridge Drive in the Town Hall Crossing neighborhood. There, Habitat and the city have collaborated to help bridge the housing gap in recent years by constructing six homes for first-time owners. So far, three have been completed and were dedicated to families in 2023 according to the organization’s website.
The program relies on volunteer labor to push market-rate housing with low or no interest rate mortgages across the finish line. Senior Site Supervisor Dennis Hellenbrand, who has spent 17 years with Habitat, was appreciative of Friday’s turnout.
“Great group, they worked hard and we got a lot done,” said Hellenbrand, “Weather sure was a little bit nasty. It seemed like it only got colder as they day went on, but they hung in there.”
Hellenbrand stated that the 1135 Westridge build was about a week away from completion, while the site next door had only a month and a half to go. He mentioned that any sort of celebration on his part would only come after passing city inspections.
