Rockford felon sentenced to prison for bringing semi-automatic weapon to Springfield bar

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — Joshua Mathies, 28, of Rockford, has been sentenced to spend 2 years in prison for illegal possession of a firearm.

Mathies was a convicted felon at the time of his arrest on May 14th, 2023, and was prohibited from possessing firearms.

According to prosecutors, Mathies had taken a semi-automatic weapon into a Springfield bar and attempted to flee from police, who were notified by another patron that Mathies had a gun.

Police tasered Mathies as he tried to run, authorities said.

Mathies was on parole for a previous gun offense.

He was sentenced on February 8th, 2024.

In addition to his prison term, Mathies must serve 3 years of supervised release.
