Deputies: Man with knife tried to break into jail ATM

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — Deputies say a man armed with a knife entered the bond lobby of the Calhoun County jail, pounded on a door and started breaking into the ATM.

It happened around 6:20 a.m. Wednesday at the jail in Battle Creek, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say a 26-year-old Battle Creek man entered the bond lobby with a knife in his hand. The man pounded on the door that leads to the jail’s interior, according to the sheriff’s office.

When corrections deputies saw he was holding a knife, they contacted dispatch to ask for assistance.

Then, the man started to break into the ATM in the lobby, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies locked the exterior door so the man could not escape.

Officers with the Battle Creek Police Department made contact with the man, and deputies say he “eventually” surrendered and was taken into the jail.

The man’s name was not released Wednesday.
