BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — One of the suspects in the shooting death of a Fresno State student at a Delano park will be examined by a psychologist ahead of a hearing at which it will be determined whether his case is sent to adult court.
The defendant, Kevin Gonzalez, was a minor when Nayeli Carrillo Gonzalez was fatally shot at Cesar Chavez Park on Jan. 2, 2020.
Because of his age at the time of the shooting, Kevin Gonzalez must undergo a transfer hearing in which a judge considers factors including criminal sophistication, prior criminal history and the seriousness of the offense before deciding whether the case stays in juvenile court — where penalties are less severe — or is moved to adult court.
Kevin Gonzalez and co-defendants Jonathan Gutierrez and Alexander Carrillo were arrested more than two years after the shooting on charges including murder and attempted murder.
The next hearing for Gonzalez is scheduled in late March. Gutierrez, 22, has a hearing set for Thursday in adult court. It was not immediately clear when Carrillo was due back in court.
