Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava has been at the forefront of national discussions this offseason, ranging from an NCAA investigation surrounding his recruitment to high 2024 Heisman Trophy odds. One thing seems sure – the California native can play football at a high level.
He’s touted as a Heisman hopeful for next season, and the value is there. Many are uncertain what a full season of Iamaleava will look like, a fair critique. However, it could also be a buy-low moment for a high-impact player. Barrett Sallee discussed what he sees from Iamaleava that would warrant laying a bet down on his Heisman odds .
“Nico Iamaleava at +1700 is a little surprising for a couple of reasons. One, we saw him run in the bowl game, and he’s really darn good at it. So if you’re already in that system, like Hendon Hooker, that’s already a good foundation with that Josh Heupel offense, that’s a good start, right? But the question is, is he Joe Milton, or is he not Joe Milton? You’d better hope it’s the latter, and I truly believe it is the latter because Joe Milton can’t throw; he only has a fastball. He can’t come in and throw a change-up; I said that before last season, Tennessee fans – you didn’t like that. I think we saw that was the case in 2023. I buy Nico as a passer, enough of a passer. I’m not saying he’s gonna win the Heisman Trophy, but at +1700, I absolutely buy the value.” – Barrett Sallee on Nico Iamaleava
