Community members concerned following early results in Special Election

SPOKANE, Wash. — Some community members are concerned following the early results in the 2024 Spokane County Special Election.

The unofficial results of the election were released Tuesday night, showing over 54% of voters said yes to a Spokane Public Schools Levy and Bond.

Spokane Public Schools is asking for a $200 million bond that would pay for remodeling some schools and replacing others. Levies support services like extracurricular activities, special education programs, and smaller class sizes. The estimated levy rate per $1,000 of assessed property value is $2.50.

School bonds require a 60% supermajority to pass.

Some SPS parents say they are disappointed with the bond failing. They add that some school buildings are too old and students need a new place to study.

Spokane Public Schools board president Nikki Lockwood says they are considering many options for what’s next for the district.
