The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Nevada Department of Corrections – Silver State Industries are hosting a wild horse and burro adoption event. It will be held at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC) on February 24, 2024. The event will showcase up to 20 wild horses and one burro, all trained by NNCC inmates. The horses, aged between four and seven, are from California, Nevada, Oregon, and Utah. The burro, a 3-year-old male, was born at the facility and originates from Lovelock, Nevada.
The animals up for adoption have received at least 120 days of training through the inmate training program. The event will include several geldings, a mare, and the trained burro. Hank Curry, NNCC Lead Trainer, stated that the inmate trainers are eager to present their trained animals and discuss their characteristics with the public.
Details about the event can be found on the NNCC webpage, including a catalog. Videos of the trained horses and burro are also available on YouTube. The NNCC is at 1721 Snyder Avenue, south of Carson City, Nevada. Public viewing starts at 9:00 a.m., followed by a competitive-bid adoption event at 10:00 a.m.
