Cupid Crew brings Valentine’s Day loving to Hawaii Kupuna

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Thousands of Hawaii’s kupuna got a special Valentine’s Day treat today.

AARP’s “Cupid crew” delivered 6,400 roses and more than 800 handmade Valentine’s Day cards to kupuna on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island.

It’s part of a nationwide effort to spread love to those who may be at risk for social isolation.

KHON2 stopped by the Lanakila Multi Purpose Senior Center where those roses and cards were being handed out, along with some tasty treats and entertainment for the residents.

“This is a very special time to express our love for one another and we really appreciate everyone and I know the seniors appreciate everything that is done for them as well,” Suzie Chun Oakland, Lanakila Multi Purpose Senior Center Program Director said.

“What we’re trying to do is raise awareness about the dangers of isolation among the senior population,” added Jackie Boland, AARP Hawaii Community Outreach Director. “One of the big problems with isolation is people tend to get dementia, about 50% more likely if they’re isolated, so we’re really happy to see programs like Lanakila’s where people are socializing, having fun and keeping strong.”
