LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – A key nonprofit in the city’s safety net for the homeless is facing an IRS debt and board resignations – leaving city officials “scrambling” to prepare to replace programs if the agency shuts down.
Advent House Ministries, which has been in operation for more than 30 years, was hit with an IRS bill for unpaid employment taxes. Susan Cancro, executive director for the agency, confirmed the existence of the bill, but declined to discuss details with 6 News.
Former Board Chair Bill Given tells 6 News he resigned a week ago from the board over financial concerns. He declined to discuss what those concerns were.
“I don’t think I want to get into the financial situation at the time I left,” he tells 6 News in a phone call.
Eric Scorsone was on the board until a “few weeks ago.” Scarsone was a senior economist for the Michigan Senate Fiscal Agency in 2010, and is currently the director of MSU Extension Center for Local Government Finance and Policy.
He says he resigned because he is moving. But declined to discuss the financial situation when asked. He referred 6 News to Given to discuss the financial situation.
