Student wants action after she said she was wrongfully accused of trespassing at Laney High

More than a week after a student expressed concerns to the New Hanover County Board of Education regarding treatment from an area high school, officials said they are taking the necessary steps to address the situation.

“Our focus is on exploring avenues to guarantee a secure and positive environment for students and staff, and our dedicated staff is fully committed to ensuring our students are in a safe, secure, and positive environment,” Chief Communications Officer Salvatore Cardella said in an email.

SEA-TECH junior Nevaeh Taylor told the school board on Feb. 6 that the incident happened one morning back in November when she and her friends went inside Laney High School’s cafeteria to wait on their shuttle to SEA-TECH because the temperature dipped below 30 degrees.

Taylor and other SEA-TECH and Wilmington Early College students catch shuttles at traditional area high schools such as Laney because they are their designated home schools.

While Taylor was waiting for her shuttle to come, she said, she was approached by a Laney staff member and asked who they were and why they were there. She said the staff member took her personal information, told her she was trespassing and called one of the school resource officers for assistance.
