Last November, Texas passed a new law (SB4) that allows law enforcement officers to arrest and remove anyone suspected of entering the country illegally.
If arrested, the person will either be sent back to Mexico or charged with a class B misdemeanor, carrying a punishment of up to six months in jail, and most likely deported after that.
Opponents of the law believe that this is the role of the federal government, not the state of Texas. However, Texas Republicans think that the federal government is not doing enough to protect the state border, so they are going above and beyond to do the job that President Joe Biden is failing to do.
Today, the State of Texas and President Biden’s team will meet in court to determine whether the new state law should go into effect next month.
