HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — A local woman is celebrating her recovery after receiving a much-needed heart transplant.
This comes just nine months after we brought you the story of her making it on to the transplant list.
Sabrey Smith said the heart transplant has been life changing for her. With her new heart, she has been recovering for the last eight months.
“I’m blessed. I didn’t know it was going to come that quick … I thank God for it,” Smith said.
Another chance at life is what a new heart has done for Smith.
“I’m here, and I’m thankful for that,” Smith said. “I thank God for that … I’m surviving.”
She was halfway to Greensboro from Raleigh when she got the call about the heart on June 6.
It was just over a month after she made it on the transplant list. That night, she went into surgery and got the new heart.
Before the transplant to keep her heart pumping, she spent seven years having to wear a Left Ventricle Assist Device. She now looks forward to doing things that were a challenge when she had the pump like going to the beach and traveling.
