LIBERTY, N.C. (WGHP) — A Liberty police officer is being charged with driving while impaired following a crash that happened on Valentine’s Day, according to the Liberty Police Department.
At around 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, a crash involving two cars occurred on Old Liberty Road.
Police say one of the people involved in the crash was an “off-duty Liberty police officer in his personal vehicle.” The officer was allegedly on his way to report for duty at the time of the crash.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol was called to the scene to handle the investigation since the crash occurred outside of Liberty town limits; as is standard procedure.
The investigating troopers established probable cause to charge the officer with driving while impaired.
Police say that the officer has been suspended pending an internal investigation by the Town of Liberty and that NCSHP will continue to handle the criminal investigation.
