Tennessee is a wild place filled with everything from country music superstars to the amazing Smoky Mountains. The state has something for everyone to enjoy. It’s also home to some extremely long bridges. Many of the bridges in Tennessee have also found a home on the Historic Bridges Database ! The longest bridge in the beautiful state of Tennessee has quite the background story, and it just so happens to have brought two of its closest friends along in its fame.
Memphis and Arkansas Bridge – 5,222 Feet Long
The Memphis – Arkansas Bridge is phenomenally long at 5,222 feet, which is just shy of one mile! It is extra special because the second and third longest bridges in Tennessee just happen to sit right next to it. All three bridges have a long and interesting history. It’s the only place in North America with three bridges in the Historic Bridge Database, sitting side-by-side! That is something that just doesn’t happen since, most commonly, the older, less safe bridges are demolished once the new bridge is built. In the case of the three historic cantilever truss bridges over the Mississippi River, they were just too fabulous to destroy, and the locals knew that.
