A potent piece of energy in the northwest flow will slide through the forecast area starting tonight and quickly maximizing into the overnight before pulling east of the state by late Friday morning. The current expectations are for snow to work into the northwest forecast zone 7-9 PM tonight with the activity continuing to move southeast into central Iowa during the pre-dawn hours of Friday and finally east/southeast zones Friday morning. The Iowa Storm Center heavy snow model is painting 0.5-1.0″ snowfall rates across northwest and central Iowa for a time later tonight into early Friday morning which will lead to reduced visibility and locally higher amounts.
A widespread trace-2″ of snow accumulation with 2-6″ into parts of northwest Iowa. All activity will taper off from north to south Friday morning with the system sliding east of the forecast area early Friday afternoon. The forecast radar and snowfall forecast are below.
