Man accused of swindling seniors out of unfinished contractor work arrested on $2M warrant

In a successful operation on Wednesday afternoon, Santa Clara Police officers apprehended a fugitive with a $2 million warrant out of Contra Costa County for Burglary, Theft, and Elder Abuse.

The suspect, who was wanted for engaging in fraudulent general contractor scams, was taken into custody during a vehicle stop near Scott and Harrison.

The fugitive targeted primarily elderly victims through deceptive general contractor schemes, accepting payments for work that was never completed.

The arrest is a significant step in curbing such scams and protecting vulnerable members of the community.

To avoid falling victim to contractor scams, authorities recommend the following tips:

  1. Verify Licenses and Insurance:
    • Consider only contractors who are licensed and insured.
    • Check with state or county authorities to confirm a contractor’s license.
    • Request proof of insurance from the contractor.
  2. Seek Recommendations:
    • Get contractor recommendations from trusted sources such as friends or family.
  3. Check Complaints:
    • Investigate whether there are any complaints against a contractor by contacting consumer protection officials.
    • Search online for reviews or complaints about the contractor.
  4. Read Customer Reviews:
    • Explore customer reviews to gain insights into the contractor’s reputation.
    • Use trusted online rating websites for additional information.
  5. Get Multiple Estimates:
    • Obtain estimates from multiple contractors.
    • Compare written estimates, considering factors like work description, materials, completion date, and price.
  6. Beware of Large Down Payments:
    • Exercise caution if a contractor requests a substantial or full down payment.
