Toledo man who accidentally killed mother pleads guilty to reckless homicide

A Toledo man pleaded guilty to reckless homicide Thursday morning in Lucas County Common Pleas Court for the Nov. 20 shooting death of his mother at her home.

Joshua Brown, 18, of the 2200 block of Warren Street, faces up to three years in prison when Judge Lori Olender sentences him Feb. 29 for the third-degree felony. He also could get up to five years’ probation and a fine of up to $10,000.

Brown told police responding to an emergency call he had become afraid when he heard someone unexpectedly walking upstairs in the home, retrieved a gun he had in his lap, walked out into a hallway, and fired a single shot into the stairwell. He was arrested that day.

He accepted a plea offer Thursday morning in which prosecutors agreed to drop a gun specification that would have added three years of mandatory and consecutive prison time to his pending sentence.

Beyond answering Judge Olender’s questions about his understanding of the plea hearing, Brown offered no further statement to the court Thursday.
