Lubbock man dead after fatal wreck in Castro County Thursday

DIMMITT, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Texas Department of Public Safety reports that one person is dead after a wreck in Castro County Thursday afternoon.

DPS said Russell Smallwood, 61, of Lubbock was killed in a two-vehicle wreck on US 385 about 9 miles north of Dimmitt.

According to DPS, a pickup truck towing a trailer was going north on US 385 when for unknown reasons it was side-swiped by a Ford F450 towing a trailer driven by Smallwood who was in the southbound lane before traveling into the northbound lane.

DPS said the Ford F450 came to rest in a ditch west of the road, the other pickup was “jack-knifed” in the northbound lane.

Smallwood was pronounced dead at the scene by the Castro County Justice of the Peace, Mary Ewing. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said the crash remained under investigation.
