3 communities hoping to house RI’s first Costco

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — There are now three Rhode Island communities looking to court Costco Wholesale Club .

The retailer was supposed to meet Thursday with Warwick Mayor Frank Picozzi to discuss opening a store in the city, but canceled last minute.

Rhode Island is one of only four states that doesn’t have a Costco yet. Costco originally sought to build a store at the former ACI building in Cranston, but withdrew its permits .

Warwick City Council President Steve McAllister had invited Costco to visit the city and consider opening there instead.

But Warwick and Cranston aren’t the only communities with a hats in the ring.

Smithfield Town Councilor John Tassoni Jr. tells 12 News he’s asked Costco’s advisory agency, Northwest Atlantic Realty, to consider building the store on a plot of land along Routes 7 and 116.

That location, according to Tassoni, would be ideal due to its accessibility to all Rhode Islanders via I-95, I-295 and Route 146.
