Broward County’s Rent Crisis: Navigating a Decade of Change with the New Master Housing Plan

In response to the crisis, Broward County officials are preparing to release their 10-year master housing plan—a roadmap promising solutions over the next decade. The plan aims to help its nearly 2 million residents live comfortably while ideally paying less than one-third of their incomes on housing. But can this plan effectively navigate the complex dynamics of the crisis and ensure a future where everyone has a place to call home?

The Florida International University Metropolitan Center developed the plan and is expected to provide a roadmap for tackling the affordable housing crisis effectively. It addresses several major planning topics and challenges, including economic impacts, land use, zoning, regulations, land availability, funding sources, housing equity, homelessness, special needs housing, the role of municipalities, provision of public infrastructure and services, and transportation planning.
