As the federal income tax return deadline nears, student volunteers at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) are providing free tax assistance. This service is available to those earning under $64,000, TAMU-CC students, faculty, staff, and military personnel. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, led by Ginger DeLatte, aims to simplify tax filing and maximize returns. VITA is a national initiative offering free tax help to low-income individuals and families.

The student volunteers gain practical experience in data entry, review, analysis, problem-solving, and customer service. They also connect with nonprofit organizations and local employers. DeLatte emphasized the program’s dual benefits: it serves the community and provides a rewarding experience for the students.

Melody Valerio, a volunteer and Accounting major, initially joined for extra credit but developed a passion for community service. She highlighted the program’s role in offering a free, informative, and welcoming service, helping community members save money on their tax returns.
