GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Police have released more details about a fatal crash that closed part of the interstate on Wednesday .
According to Greensboro Police Department, just before 4:30 p.m., an SUV was stopped on the right shoulder of the I-73 S ramp onto I-40 west while the owner of the SUV, Marcus Antonio Nivens, 62, was putting gas in it. He was wearing a yellow reflective vest.
The car that had brought gas for Nivens was parked behind his SUV, with two people inside.
A car ran off the road, hit the car and then struck Nivens and his SUV. Nivens died at the scene. The pair in the car were not hurt. The driver of the second car, Destiny Hankins, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
She is being charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, failure to maintain lane control, not wearing a seatbelt and no operator’s license.
