Winter ain’t over yet; messy start to holiday weekend with ‘inches of snow’ to the region

Friday is a day of building clouds and split forecast on several fronts. Temperatures will range from the low 40s for our northern counties while our southern counties into Virginia push into the low 50s. At least, for the daylight hours, we remain dry up until sunset when showers begin to push in.

Rain showers will dominate south of I-64 Friday evening with up to a half an inch expected. Warmer daytime temps help out for counties like McDowell, Wyoming, Mercer, Summers, Monroe, Tazewell, Giles, and Bland. Warm grounds and rain later into the night keeps snow totals lower. The exception being areas above 2,800 feet who see more of a winter mix.

Through the I-64 corridors across Greenbrier county through Raleigh county, a few icy spots can be expected this evening as the change from rain to snow will take a little longer to occur. An “ice line” will cut our viewing area in half along the I-64 corridor. This will create travel issues, especially when the snows start falling overnight with an ice layer underneath.
