Music Column: Metro Mix Chorus of Sweet Adelines International prepares for regionals

Our quartets were excited to deliver Singing Valentines in the Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, and corridor areas on Feb. 14. Those deliveries are very special to the recipients – and it’s a great feeling to be part of the memorable surprise.

Continuing to prepare for our Region 5 competition, Metro Mix Chorus was recently coached by Rob Mance, musical director of the 2023 tenth-place international chorus Vocal Standard based in Kansas City. He listened to each of us sing a couple lines of a song, gave us personal instruction on how to improve our voice production, and formed us in a new standing arrangement to best enhance our sound and abilities. He is so fun to work with and puts everyone at ease. Mance will return for another coaching session on March 20, and we look forward to it.

This Friday afternoon, the “Extension Chords” group from our chorus will sing at a Naturalization Ceremony in Cedar Rapids. These performances are heartwarming and a source of pride for our country and us as individuals as we watch immigrants become new American citizens.
