DES MOINES, Iowa — Snow-covered roads caused traffic problems on central Iowa roads Friday morning.
Multiple crashes were reported during the morning commute.
The Des Moines Police Department responded to more than 10 crashes between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., according to Sgt. Paul Parizek. Most of the crashes were the result of cars spinning out on the snowy roads.
A snow ordinance for the snow routes in Des Moines is now in effect.
The Iowa Department of Transportation is keeping tabs on the roads. As of 10:25 a.m., most of the accidents on major highways had been cleared. The DOT is still monitoring:
- IA 5 southbound between County Raod G16 and County Road S23, right shoulder blocked due to a crash
I-80 westbound, just east of the DeSoto exit was blocked for hours because of a crash involving several vehicles. That crash has now been cleared and the westbound lanes of travel are open again.
A tow ban is in effect for several counties in south central Iowa.
Drivers are being advised to take it slow on the roads because of the slippery conditions, especially in areas where emergency responders may be on the scene because of previous crashes.
