Retired judge, commissioner Carol Sue Reader dies at 76

LIVINGSTON COUNTY — A beloved judge and once-county commissioner, Carol Sue Reader, died Wednesday, Feb. 15.

According to reporting from The Livingston Post , Reader suffered a stroke.

Reader sat on the bench in Livingston County’s 53rd District Court for 12 years, according to her personal biography . She was elected to the Livingston County Board of Commissioners in 2020, losing a primary bid for re-election in 2022.

Before her time on the bench, Reader worked in the Livingston County Prosecutor’s Office for nine years. She worked in a private practice for 15 years in divorce, criminal law as a public defender, and probate before being elected judge in 2007.

Reader spearheaded many philanthropic efforts, including co-founding the Livingston Area Council Against Spouse Abuse (LACASA); founding the Livingston Intensive Treatment Court, working closely with defendants suffering from mental illness; and similarly founding the Livingston Veterans Treatment Court, a special court for veteran defendants who “now find themselves in troubled times.”
