From the week of February 19, 2024, a new traffic layout will be in place on US 19 from SR 580 (Main Street) to Tampa Road in Clearwater, Florida. Both northbound and southbound lanes of US 19 will move towards the median. This change is temporary and is expected to last until 2026. Electronic signs will guide drivers, and access to homes and businesses will be available during construction.

U-turns will still be possible at signalized intersections on SR 580 (Main Street), Republic Drive/Hammock Pine Boulevard, SR 586 (Curlew Road), and Tampa Road. Drivers are advised to be careful and allow extra time for travel. Speed limits will be reduced in the area.

This change is part of a larger project to improve US 19. The project will transform the current six-lane highway into a six-lane road with controlled access, meaning access will be limited to certain points. The $242.6 million project will also add one-way service roads on both sides of US 19 from SR 580 to north of CR 95/CR 39.

New interchanges will be built just north of Boy Scout Road and at SR 586 (Curlew Road) to improve traffic flow and safety. The project is expected to be completed by 2029.
