South Beloit school resource officer: We do more than enforce laws

SOUTH BELOIT, Ill. (WTVO) — One local officer wants to take School Resource Officer Appreciation Day to show they do much more than enforce laws.

Jeff Schewe is a school resource officer for the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department serving the South Beloit School District. He served for over a decade before coming into the position.

He said working with kids and building trust in police is what makes his job so special.

“The thing I like most about my job is just seeing kids every day, you know, whether it’s working sporting events or saying good morning to them every day, knowing that if they have questions, they can come and ask me And they don’t they’re not intimidated or nervous. it’s amazing how much the kids love you,” said Schewe.

“You know, just just come up and give you a hug when they see you because because they appreciate you and and and those are the things that I want to make sure that we continue with our youth is that they appreciate the law enforcement community,” said Schewe. “There’s a lot of bad things about enforcement out there, and I feel it’s my way to to help create that bond for the younger generation to appreciate law enforcement,”
