SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A wide-reaching attempt to scam non-profits has targeted a number of South Dakota organizations.
KELOLAND News first reported this back on February 13, 2024 , when the Sioux Falls based St. Francis House revealed an authentic-looking cashier’s check for $191,250 had been received, but had been flagged by the bank.
The reason for the red flag? The amount — $191,250 — and the fact that other checks were uncovered with the same serial number.
The check was sent to the St. Francis House by a person listed as Alphonso Blye, donating it on behalf of his deceased mother.
The Better Business Bureau, commenting on the attempted fraud, said the purpose would likely be to get an organization to deposit the fake check, then request a refund of the donation before the bank received confirmation that the check was false.
KELOLAND News has confirmed that this scam also targeted other South Dakota non-profits, including DakotAbilities and The Community Outreach.
