Alliance YWCA buys triplex to house more women and children

  • Alliance YWCA bought a triplex at 721 S. Union Ave. on Feb. 9, 2024, to have a second transitional shelter for women and children.
  • The purchase was possible due to a donation from the Donna Jean Ermlich estate. Ermlich died in 2021.

ALLIANCE − Alliance YWCA has long needed more room for women and families, and now it has it.

The nonprofit agency recently bought a large triplex at 721 S. Union Ave. for a second transitional shelter. The dorm-style property has 14 bedrooms, six bathrooms, common living spaces, shared kitchens and laundry rooms.

Stacie Bacorn, executive director of Alliance YWCA, said the agency’s main location on East Market Street has “served us very well,” but space is limited. There is a wait-list of nearly 40 women with children, and the main location only houses six at a time.

“We’re seeing an abundance of employed homeless. They’re employed but they can’t afford to live somewhere,” she said.

All occupants can stay up to two years while actively finding a permanent place to live.
