Man gets 21 years in Oak Street homicide

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man who pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in a deadly gang-related shooting on Oak Street was sentenced Thursday to 21 years in prison.

Mario Romo, 31, was sentenced in the death of Mario Bojorquez, 33.

On July 9, 2022, police were called to Oak Street just south of Palm Street to reports of a shooting. They found Bojorquez with several gunshot wounds. He was taken to Kern Medical, where he later died.

Police said in reports filed in Superior Court they believe Romo and others were involved in a marijuana trafficking organization, and Bojorquez, a documented Sureno gang member, stole from them. The shooting was retaliation for the theft, an investigator wrote.
