Mixed verdicts for 3 charged in Wasco prison death

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A jury returned mixed verdicts this week in the case of three Wasco State Prison inmates who were charged with murder in the death of another inmate two years ago.

Benjamin Kolehmainen and Tyler Douglass were found guilty Thursday of involuntary manslaughter and assault by a prisoner likely to result in great bodily injury, according to court records. Joshua Mitchell was only found guilty of the assault charge.

A sentencing date was not yet scheduled.

The three were charged in the death of Michael Angel Iverson, 42.

According to court filings, they attacked Iverson on March 7, 2022, punching him in the head and face and continuing the assault after Iverson fell and stopped moving. They ignored orders to stop, the filings say, and guards pepper-sprayed them in the face to end the beating.
