Police chase in Maryland involving stolen state truck ends; man in custody

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — What started with the theft of a truck Friday afternoon quickly turned into a police chase involving several agencies before it came to an end.

Maryland State Police (MSP) said troopers received word that someone stole a Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) State Highway Administration (SHA) roadside assistance truck in Prince George’s County around 5:15 p.m.

Police investigating shooting at Glenmont Metro Station

MSP Cpt. Brian Smith, commander of Washington Metro Troop, said the situation started as a hit and run near I-495 and the Greenbelt Metro. He said one of the vehicles involved was a white Ford Ranger pickup that left the scene. The pickup then crashed at the park and ride near 495 and Route 1.

At that point, Smith said the MDOT truck operator stepped out of his truck to make sure the driver of the Ford pickup was OK. That’s when he said the driver of that pickup jumped into the SHA truck and drove off.

MSP said the person who took the truck hit power lines and 11 cars, as well as three police vehicles as he drove off in an attempt to get away from police. The trail of damage stretched from Prince George’s County to Montgomery County where the pursuit ended in White Oak.
