Community Hero Ro Tyus Hollyfield answers the call for city in need

Ro Tyus Hollyfield, 50, grew up in a family where helping out was a part of what they did. She took that lesson with her.

A lifelong Montgomerian, Tyus Hollyfield has always worked to help the community, and three years ago she started working for the city. Two years ago, when the Office of Violence Prevention started, she signed on to help the small office with its seemingly impossible mission.

“You name it, I do it,” Tyus Hollyfield said.

A lot of her advocacy takes place behind the scenes. Whether that means talking to families whose loved ones met violent ends or convincing kids to put down the guns, Tyus Hollyfield said her phone rings 24/7.

“I wish I could save every one of them. Unfortunately, I can’t,” Tyus Hollyfield said. But that does not mean she can’t try.

“A lot of these kids are being forced to grow up quickly,” Tyus Hollyfield said.

For her commitment to helping her neighbors through on-the-ground work, Tyus Hollyfield has been named the Montgomery Advertiser’s Community Hero for February, an honor made possible by South University.
