PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — February is Black History Month , and at KOIN 6, we’re sharing stories from Oregon’s Black community all month long and throughout the year.
Influential figures who have impacted Black history in Oregon
In our special program “Honoring Black History,” which airs Saturday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. on KOIN 6, watch how young Black Portlanders with Word Is Bond got the chance to visit Ghana last summer; meet the curator behind the Portland Art Museum’s Black Artists of Oregon exhibit; and learn how one Portland man is making it his mission to help communities remember and heal from some of the darkest moments in Oregon’s history.
We’ll also take our viewers to meet a local Portland State University professor who is making waves locally and on a national scale; hear from barry johnson, a Black artist whose work is among those being showcased at a local gallery; explore a new archive of Portland’s Black music scene; and see how a Jefferson High School student is bringing a dance style commonly associated with Historically Black College and University marching bands.
