BBQ restaurant chain with loaded tots and fried okra opens new Florida store, despite past closure

For many, a good barbecue meal is more than just food; it’s a celebration of flavors and a cherished tradition. In Florida, barbecue enthusiasts are spoilt for choice, with options ranging from well-known chains like Mission BBQ and Rivers Smokehouse to local gems like Jazzy’s in Tampa and Jenkins Quality Barbecue in Jacksonville. Amidst this smoky landscape, a familiar name is making headlines once again – Sonny’s BBQ is set to open a new location in the Sunshine State.

Sonny’s BBQ has been a staple in the Florida barbecue scene since the 1960s. Founded by Sonny and Lucile Tillman, the chain has always aimed to maintain the charm of a local barbecue joint, even as it expanded. Known for its slow-smoked meats over oak, Sonny’s has garnered a loyal following for its succulent barbecue pork, alongside crowd-pleasers like loaded tots and fried okra.

However, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Market Realist reports that Sonny’s has had to close several of its Florida locations in recent years, including ones in Fort Myers in 2021, Oakwood in 2019, and Jacksonville in 2021. From its peak of 150 locations, the chain now operates closer to 100 stores. Despite these setbacks, the brand’s popularity remains strong, as evidenced by the 4-star rating of the Palm Harbor location on TripAdvisor. Patrons continue to praise the food, prices, and service, though some have noted that the temperature inside can be a bit chilly.
