Fort Johnson Road reopens nearly week after water main break

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – Fort Johnson Road has reopened to traffic much earlier than expected.

The roadway on James Island has been closed since early Saturday morning after a valve blew in a water transmission line, causing flooding near the intersection with Folly Road and a large hole to open.

Officials with Charleston Water System (CWS) said the road reopened shortly before 3:30 p.m. on Friday, but they expect nearby Jeffords Street to remain closed until further notice.

The utility company previously said they expected the road to be closed through next week while crews made necessary repairs that were made worse by heavy rain earlier in the week and gas line issues.

Representatives from Charleston Water System provided an update on the project during a James Island Town Council meeting Thursday night where they acknowledged the repair process was complicated.
