ABQ BioPark celebrating feathered love story

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Valentine’s Day may be over but a love story has begun at the ABQ BioPark. Bali myna are critically endangered species from the island of Bali. Late last year, the BioPark introduced a female named Masa to their five-year-old male named Pozole.

The BioPark’s bird care team made a “honeymoon suite” for the two hoping to help repopulation efforts. There are only 50 to 60 mature Bali myna’s in the wild which is an improvement from 2001’s all-time low of only six. Bali myna’s are known to form long-term monogamous relationships.

BioPark staff says if you walk by their Birds of the Islands habitat, you can hear the two partake in courtship behaviors like head bobbing, grooming each other, and tweets of love. They hope the pair will be welcoming chicks in the future.
