City of Albuquerque looking to add another open space area on westside

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The city is looking to add another open space area for the public to enjoy by possibly purchasing a west side property. “This piece of property is very special,” said Albuquerque City Councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn.

It’s a push to buy a piece of property for future recreation, conservation of wildlife, and archeological sites. “We want to make sure that’s preserved as the west side continues to expand. Having those spaces of open space and natural lands, it’s just important not only for those critters who live there but for the peace of mind of our citizens,” said Councilor Fiebelkorn.

Councilor Fiebelkorn is one of the sponsors of a bill to authorize the Parks and Recreation Department to apply for a grant to help purchase the 640-acre Northern Sand Dunes property. According to the bill, the grant would cover half of the cost to buy the land while the city would pay the rest.
