Los Lunas community members protest Niagara Bottling expansion

LOS LUNAS, N.M. (KRQE) – Protestors came out to Memorial Park in Los Lunas voicing their frustration with how the Village Council handled the Niagara Water deal. Earlier this month, the council allowed the Niagara Bottling Company to expand its operation in Los Lunas.

Report: LANL spent $930M on goods and services from New Mexico businesses

The new deal allows Niagara to pump nearly 200 million gallons of water out of the aquifer every year. Since the decision has been made, some believe they weren’t allowed to speak. “We came prepared to speak, we encouraged everyone coming to the meeting to be prepared to speak. It wasn’t until shortly before the meeting, that the mayor was intending to prevent public comment,” said Deirdra Velasquez, community organizer.

Los Lunas Village officials say that Niagara has a history of pumping more water than they’re permitted.
