ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Sandia Peak Tram is now one step closer to reopening to the public. On Friday, officials announced a new AC motor and brake system have been installed. The new equipment will run cars along the nearly three miles of distance between the base and the peak. The old DC motor ran for over 50 years.

Officials say the new 600-horsepower motor will use less power to move the cars along the path and hopefully keep the cars running for another 50 years. If all goes to plan, they’re hoping to reopen by mid-March.
