CHARLOTTE, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) – Even after learning to look left, right, and left again, having an extra set of eyes doesn’t hurt these days.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools crossing guard Sue Killar tells us what she gets in return is the joy of being around children, which helps fill a painful void.
At Olde Providence Elementary, students follow Sue every morning and afternoon.
“I’ve got a loud voice, let me tell you,” Killar said. “If you start walking on to my road behind me, I say, ‘Hey, wait! Back, back, back!”
They call her Miss Sue. Her voice carries authority and a slice of northern charm.
“It’s not just my New York accent, it’s my personality,” she told Queen City News.
As she crosses with them, she also teaches.
“The three-second rule doesn’t apply to anything you drop in the road to eat,” she urged them to cross swiftly despite distractions.
Each week, she gives a dollar bill to those who obey safety rules to kids, including Meryl Wurtzbacher. Her dad, Scott, is one of Sue’s admirers.
