Reno, Incline take top 2 spots in statewide ‘We the People’ competition

Reno High School took the top spot in Nevada’s “We the People” competition, while Incline High School placed second overall in the civics challenge.

Both schools will now compete in the national competition in April in Virginia and Washington, D.C.

The national competition, sponsored by the nonpartisan Center for Civic Education, has been held annually since 1988 to support civics education with complementary curriculum for upper elementary, middle and high school levels. Nevada is one of 40 states that require high school students to take a civics course.

Competing teams are tested on their knowledge about the program’s six units:

Unit 1: What are the philosophical and historical foundations of the American political system?

Unit 2: How did the framers create the Constitution?

Unit 3: How has the Constitution been changed to further the ideals contained in the Declaration of Independence?

Unit 4: How have the values and principles embodied in the Constitution shaped American institutions and practices?
