Dr. Shelly Ann Moorman, a retired Spanish professor and ex-chair of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, died on February 5, 2024. She started her teaching career at the College of St. Thomas in 1968. At that time, it was an all-male institution and she was one of only three female faculty members.
Almost ten years later, the college became coeducational and Moorman was promoted to associate dean of students. She made significant contributions to the institution, leading to the establishment of an award in her name after her retirement in 2004. The Shelly A. Moorman Outstanding Student Award in Modern and Classical Languages is given to exceptional students in the field.
Moorman’s legacy will continue through the award and through the many students she influenced during her tenure. She made significant efforts in education, especially in promoting gender equality, leaving a significant impact on the College of St. Thomas.
A Mass of Christian burial for Moorman is planned for Monday, February 26, at 10:30 a.m. at Christ The King Catholic Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Visitation will take place one hour before the service.
