Drivers, beware: New text-message scam targets FasTrak customers

Transit officials say Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge drivers should beware of a scam targeting FasTrak customers .

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Bay Area Toll Authority are warning of a new con targeting fast-lane customers through fraudulent text messages.

Throughout the last few weeks, some FasTrak customers have received texts with amounts due and a payment link that redirects them to a phony website, where they are instructed to pay the fines.

John Goodwin, assistant director of communications for the MTC and BATA, said that both customers and agents in the FasTrak customer service center worked together to quickly identify the texts as fraud attempts. They noticed that the website misspelled FasTrak, validating officials’ suspicions.

“The website is fraudulent and not connected with FasTrak in any way,” Goodwin said.

Drivers of Bay Area toll bridges and express lanes, which include the Golden Gate and Bay bridges headed into and out of The City, are encouraged to conduct business with the agencies solely through their website.
