Dramatic milestone: Durfee sophomore breaks the 1,000-point mark in wild win

FALL RIVER — Jahmier Stephenson never forgot as an eighth grader when Jevon Holley became the 15th member of the exclusive 1,000-point club at Durfee High School on Senior Night.

On Friday morning at school, the Hilltopper transfer student from Bishop Connolly kept watching the film on Holley draining a deep 3-pointer on him to reach the milestone. Now it was his turn.

“I knew he hit it on me,” Stephenson smiled. “I knew my time was coming.”

The Fall River native eclipse the 1,000-point mark on free throws with 0.4 seconds remaining as the Durfee boys basketball team pulled off a dramatic, come-from-behind, 67-63, victory over Braintree on Senior Night before a large crowd at B.M.C. Durfee High School.

Although most of Stephenson’s career points came when he doned a Cougars uniform right across from Durfee on Elsbree Street, he joined a long list of 1,000-point scorers — Al Attar (1956), Ed “Woody” Berube (1963), Ken Fiola (1977), Kevin Whiting (1978), Brian O’Neil (1984), Paul Hart (1984), Tom D’Ambrosio (1987), Matt Attar (1988), Mike Herren (1989), Judd McDonald (1989), Jeff Caron (1994), Chris Herren (1994), Nick Christ (2000), Jamal Johnson (2005) and Holley (2022) — that reached the milestone while wearing a Hilltopper uniform.
