HONOLULU (Island News) – The woman who’s been called the “Martha Stewart of Japan” made an appearance at Ala Moana Center Friday morning. Dozens of people were lined up outside the Big Island Candies store to meet celebrity homemaker Harumi Kurihara. Despite never having any professional training as a chef, the 76-year-old Kurihara built a business empire in Japan which includes TV shows, a chain of stores, cookware, award-winning cookbooks and now cookies with a taste of the islands.
